What common car repairs cost in 2026

Car trouble is the most common surprise expense in America. In the Federal Reserve’s latest household survey, 30% of adults said they had a major vehicle repair or replacement in the prior year (Fed SHED 2025). And repairs are getting pricier: the average check-engine-light repair hit a record $554 in 2025, up 33% from 2024 (CarMD 2026 Vehicle Health Index).

Fix now, fix soon, or wait?

Not every repair on an estimate is urgent. Ask the shop to split the list so you only borrow for what keeps the car safe and running.

Fix now
  • Brakes, steering or tires that are unsafe
  • A flashing check-engine light
  • Anything that stops you getting to work
Fix soon
  • A steady check-engine light
  • Fluid leaks and worn belts
  • Warning lights the shop flags as likely to worsen
Can wait
  • Cosmetic damage
  • Upgrades and add-ons
  • Maintenance that isn’t due yet

Get it in writing. A written estimate that lists parts and labor makes it easier to compare shops and to borrow the right amount.

Never use your car as collateral for a repair. A title loan can cost far more than the repair and lets the lender take the car if you fall behind.

Payment examples for common repairs

Fixed-rate loans, no origination fee, on-time payments. Try your own numbers in the loan payment calculator.

Repair · termAPRMonthly paymentTotal interest
$554 check-engine repair · 6 mo24.99%$99.18$41.07
$1,511 catalytic converter · 12 mo24.99%$143.60$212.25
$3,000 major repair · 24 mo19.99%$152.67$664.15

A short term keeps the cost small: the $554 repair costs about $41 in interest over six months. Stretching a big repair to 24 months lowers the payment but more than triples the interest compared with a 12-month term at the same rate.

Shop financing and “0% for 6 months” offers

Many repair shops partner with financing companies or offer a store credit card. These can be a good deal, but read the terms before you sign. The most common catch is deferred interest: if any part of the promotional balance is still unpaid when the promo ends, you can be charged interest going back to the original purchase date, not just on what’s left.

  • Ask whether the offer is “no interest” (true 0%) or “no interest if paid in full” (deferred interest).
  • Divide the balance by the promo months and pay at least that much each month, not just the minimum.
  • Check the rate that applies after the promo ends and compare it with a fixed-rate loan.
  • Find out whether the plan is a new credit account that will appear on your credit report.

A fixed-rate installment loan has no promo cliff: the APR and payment are set on day one, and the loan is paid off on a known date.

Fix it or replace it?

Before borrowing for a big repair, compare it with what replacing the car would cost. A few questions help:

  • What is the car worth? Look up its value with a pricing guide. A repair that costs more than the car is worth is hard to justify.
  • What else is coming? Ask the mechanic what other repairs are likely in the next year.
  • How long will you keep it? A one-time repair on a car you’ll drive for years is often cheaper than a new monthly car payment, insurance increase and taxes.
  • Is it safe? If the car can’t be made safe for a reasonable price, replacing it may be the better use of borrowed money.

Buying a used car: personal loan or auto loan?

If the repair isn’t worth it and you’re replacing the car, an auto loan usually costs less than a personal loan because the vehicle secures it. NCUA’s latest survey shows a 48-month used-car loan averaging 5.53% at credit unions and 7.73% at banks (NCUA, Dec 2025).

$5,000 used carAPR · termMonthly paymentTotal interest
Credit union auto loan5.53% · 48 mo$116.35$584.84
Bank auto loan7.73% · 48 mo$121.43$828.73
Personal loan, good credit19.99% · 36 mo$185.79$1,688.53
Personal loan, higher rate24.99% · 36 mo$198.77$2,155.82

A personal loan can still make sense for a small private-party purchase, an older car an auto lender won’t finance, or when you want to own the title outright from day one. Just know you’re likely paying more for that flexibility.

If you can’t pay the repair shop

In many states, a shop that has worked on your car has a mechanic’s lien: it can keep the vehicle until the bill is paid. Selling the car is a separate step that usually requires notice, a waiting period or a court process, and the rules differ by state (Upsolve). Talk to the shop early. Many will release the car on a payment plan or hold off while your loan funds.

Agree on the price before work starts. Ask the shop to call you for approval if the cost will go over the estimate. Some states require written authorization for extra work.

Vehicle cost loan FAQ

Can I use a personal loan for car repairs?

Yes. A personal loan can be used for most legal purposes, including repairs. You get the money as a lump sum and pay the shop directly, then repay the lender in fixed monthly payments.

Is a personal loan or an auto loan better for buying a used car?

For most purchases, an auto loan costs less because the car secures it. In NCUA’s December 2025 survey, a 48-month used-car loan averaged 5.53% at credit unions and 7.73% at banks. A personal loan can make sense for a small private-party purchase that an auto lender won’t finance.

What’s the average car repair cost?

According to the 2026 CarMD Vehicle Health Index, the average check-engine-light repair in 2025 cost $554 in parts and labor, a record high. Catalytic converter replacement averaged $1,511.

Can a repair shop keep my car if I can’t pay?

In many states, yes. A mechanic’s lien can let the shop hold the car until the bill is paid, and in some cases sell it after notice. Rules vary by state, so check with your state’s motor vehicle agency.

Should I fix my car or replace it?

Compare the repair cost with the car’s value and how much longer you expect to drive it. A $1,500 repair on a reliable car you plan to keep for years can be cheaper than a replacement payment.

Will a repair loan help my credit?

On-time payments on an installment loan are reported to the credit bureaus and can help your payment history over time. A hard inquiry when you formally apply can lower your score slightly at first.
